PREFACE:
In the world of modern cement and concrete, mineral admixtures have become essential ingredients of these materials. The technical, economical and ecological advantages that mineral admixtures present are undisputed.
The main technical reasons for their use are to enhance the workability of fresh concrete and the durability of hardened concrete. In fact, they affect almost every property of concrete.
Economical and ecological reasons may be equally or sometimes more significant than technical reasons. They may enable the reduction in the amount of portland cement used, which results in both economic and ecological benefits.
Furthermore, many of the mineral admixtures are industrial by-products, which may be considered as waste otherwise. This book is intended to provide detailed information on mineral admixtures used in cement and concrete.
Since there is a wide variety of mineral admixtures, some of which are in commercial use and some under development, the book is more concentrated on the commonly used ones.
The first seven chapters are related to the general characteristics of mineral admixtures, including production methods, chemical and mineralogical compositions and physical properties.
Chapters 8 through 12 describe the influences of mineral admixtures on concrete properties and behaviour. The basics of each individual concrete property are also given in these five chapters so that the effects of the mineral admixtures would be better understood.
Chapter 13 overviews the current international standards related to mineral admixtures in cement and concrete. Finally, in Chapters 14 and 15, the use of mineral admixtures in special concretes and cements are discussed.
There are huge volumes of reported research work related to mineral admixtures in cement and concrete. In writing this book, as many accessible papers and books as possible published upto June 2015 were taken into consideration.
The author wishes to express his gratitude to Dr. İsmail Özgür Yaman who urged (or even forced) him to write the book and made many suggestions and corrections; PhD candidate Burhan Aleessa Alam who helped him with the figures and all other computer-related work; Dr. Mustafa Şahmaran and Dr. Korhan Erdoğdu (his former PhD students) and Dr. Oğuzhan Çopuroğlu who allowed him to use some of their SEM images; and many other colleagues, friends and students with whom he shared his opinions.
Special thanks are due to Turkish Cement Manufacturers’ Association (TÇMB) for allowing the use of some of their research data, R&D laboratory facilities and library.
