PREFACE:

This paper gives an overview over the complete range of chassis control systems offered by Porsche and their functional characteristics. It takes the active roll compensation system as an example to detail their main objectives regarding driving dynamics, their functions and their performances when combined with different vehicle concepts. 

The active roll compensation system is well-known for the main goal it is designed for: body roll reduction under lateral acceleration that enhances the sporty character of a vehicle and its driving experience. But there is more to it than that.

The system influences driving dynamics much deeper. It also increases driving performance, agility, precision and the typical Porsche spread between handling and ride comfort. Those performances are objectively described in this paper by the corresponding driving dynamics criteria.

The current chassis control systems are well diversified. There are many different systems with different functions that directly and indirectly affect the driving behavior of a vehicle. This paper deals with their functional characteristics and their interactions with different Porsche vehicle concepts. The active roll compensation serves as an example to detail those characteristics .

The driving dynamics of a vehicle describes how it reacts on the road to the driver inputs and to the road unevenness as well as the feedback from the vehicle to the driver. It includes handling, steering feel, braking, traction and ride comfort. Those criteria, together with the suitability for daily use, are affected by the active chassis systems in a way that is described in the next paragraph.

The active chassis systems have different objectives regarding driving behavior. First they offer additional functionalities and therefore enlarge the full driving dynamics potential of a vehicle.

 Then, and contrary to the passive systems, they have the possibility to adapt their characteristics to the driving situations.This leads to a better trade-off not only between the driving dynamics characteristics but also between them and the other vehicle characteristics like mileage and suitability for daily use.

 Finally, the driving behavior can be adapted to the instantaneous requirements of the vehicle occupants through the manual or automatic selection of predefined modi. While the active systems increase the overall performance potential of the vehicle, the modi shift the focus on one or the other characteristics.

 Most chassis control systems feature several functionalities influencing the driving behavior characteristics directly or indirectly. The qualitative assessment of those effects is shown in Tables 1 to 4 for the chassis control systems available at Porsche.
